Remember the nostalgic Ladybird books for kids from the 60’s & 70’s? Did you know there are ones just for grown-ups?
Jason. A. Hazeley and Joel. P. Morris have an hilarious series of 35 Ladybird books – just for grown-ups.
For anyone with a great sense of humour.
These Ladybird pocket books use the same nostalgic illustrations from the seventies, and the same writing style. That is what makes them even more authentic. You will be tricked into thinking that they are in fact the very same serious retro books. But once you start to read them, it is clear that they definitely are not the same children’s books that many of us grew up with in the UK.
During the 1960’s and 1970’s the Key Words Reading Scheme was set in British schools, and these pocket sized Ladybird books that depicted a stereotype of classic British life were increasingly popular with children and adults. I personally learned how to read with them during my young school years.
Now these current ones were first published in 2015, and like I say, can easily be mistaken for the real deal of the 60’s and 70’s.
You will easily be able to relate to the modern satirical twists that the new stories project – a parody of present day life. In the hands of someone who does not know that these books have been re-written with pure, relatable wit, they will naturally start out thinking that the author has written such craziness unintentionally. You’ll be gasping, thinking ‘Oh no, the author doesn’t realise what he’s written!’
Excerpt from ‘The Mum’…
‘This is a mum.
A mum has two very important jobs to do. One is to look after her children.
The other is to do everything else as well’.
– Then you’ll be thinking , what on Earth is the author on about?
‘Louise’s cup of tea is going cold.
There are six more other cold cups of tea on surfaces round the house.
When the vacuuming is done, Louise hopes she will be able to find the time to throw them away’…
– Then you’ll go on to think ‘Goodness, the author is bonkers!’
‘When she was single, Debbie had nightmares about being left alone and unwanted.
For the last three years, someone has called for her every two minutes and watched her every time she has taken a bath or sat on the toilet.
Debbie now dreams of being left alone and unwanted, even for just a few minutes’.
– And finally, you’ll realise ‘Ah, this author is funny! I must read his other books and buy one for a friend and trick them!’
‘Lisa has been shopping. She had a long list of things to buy, but now thinks she may have forgotten something.
Lisa is right. She has forgotten her daughter. She left her playing on an iPad in Argos* an hour ago.
Her daughter will still be there. She likes the iPad because it is not too busy to play with her.’
There are a whopping 35 books Ladybird books in this series of ‘How It Works’ for grown-ups. All of them are super humours and witty! Which one would you choose? You can get them as presents for your adult friend’s too – if you do, don’t tell them that they are rewritten to be funny! Let them find out the fun way!
Jason. A. Hazeley and Joel.P. Morris have brilliantly changed the children’s stories and re-used the same illustrations from the old Ladybird archives.
The iconic Illustrations were carried out by the late, talented artists for Ladybird books. These top Ladybird artists of their heyday were Harry Wingfield, John Berry, Martin Aitchison, Frank Hampson, B.H Robinson (who is from my hometown of Croydon), Eric Winter, William Murray, Robert Lumley, Robert Ayton, Gerald Whitcomb, and Charles Tunnicliffe).
